Graveyard Fencing Project

This year in our Halloween display, we wanted to have a graveyard scene with several tombstones and some fencing. They had some fencing in the store, but we needed quite a bit, and it was pretty expensive. So we decided to make a piece of fencing for each of the 7 tombstones and also running along the sidewalk to help keep people out of the display as they walk up to the front door. So we got some redwood stakes from the store and cut them up to make the fence pieces. The main graveyard fences are 24" tall and 29" wide. In this photo, the pieces are laid out and we stapling them together.

Here's a section of completed graveyard fencing completed, just before painting. Notice that it was deliberately built with crooked pieces to look older and more graveyard-like.

As we assemble the fence pieces together, we use a ruler or level to help keep the fence pieces at the proper height. We want them to look good, but not too good!!

Here's a photo of the staple gun in action. The redwood slats were stapled to the cross pieces and formed a fairly robust fence section.

We built several of the larger fence sections, and then started to get ready to paint them.

Each of the fence pieces have two colors of rough paint on them. The first coat was brown, and the second coat shown below is black. The coats of paint were applied with a brush, but the natural color of the wood still comes through to make them look a little bit rougher.

The second coat of paint (black) really helps to give the fence pieces an eerie look.

We also built some shorter fence pieces that are going to be used near the sidewalk to keep guests from walking through the display.

Here's a finished photo of what a taller fence section looks like. It's ready to install for Halloween!!!
